So, sometimes we just have to be real. We have these dreams of quiet, attentive reading time with our littles. That does happen sometimes and PTL, it’s a gift! But then there are many, many other times when our littles will not coopertate with our dreams.

The above is a photo from this week where I was hoping to read The Giving Tree to my grandson for the first time….the whole thing. I tried and he tried, but the monster truck with tools was just too tempting and too much fun. The monster truck won, and the book sat on the floor.

I had to go with the moment and dig into truck fun with the boys. It turned into a “monster truck show” (not rally, as I was corrected) with trucks being launched and jumping over each other. It was fun and it was what they needed. Nana sat back and laughed as these little boys interacted and played creatively with each other. In “Giving Tree” language….Nana was happy.

I think we just need to take the moments we get and be intentional with what we say and what we teach. If the kids want to read a book about construction equipment and we have plans to teach some faith ideas….we just need to get creative. We can still point to the Lord with comments like, “Wow, these machines are awesome. God gave us minds that are so creative! Some people are so smart that they can design these cool machines and tools.” When reading a book about doctors or firemen, we can talk about how God makes us wise and caring and brave. There’s always a way to point to the creator, since He did create it all!

So, as we BOOK TIME WITH OUR KIDS, let’s be creative and clever. Let’s be flexible: sometimes the trucks will win. Let’s have fun. Above all else, let’s point them to their creator and assure them of their own beautiful design and purpose.

Thanks for reading! Please share and subscribe for a weekly idea of how we can BOOK TIME WITH OUR KIDS!
