This year, Easter will fall on Sunday, April 5, 2026.
Easter is one of the central holidays, or Holy Days, of Christianity. It honors the Resurrection of Jesus three days after His death by crucifixion. For many Christian churches, Easter is the joyful conclusion to the Lenten season of devoted prayer, fasting, and penitence…..Along with the Nativity of Christ, Easter is one of the most important celebrations in the Christian calendar. It is when Christians glorify and give thanks for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. After His crucifixion, death, and burial, Christ rose from the grave three days later. By this, He conquered death and redeemed us from sin (Christianity.com).
For believers, Easter is the most significant holiday, holy day, of all. On Easter Sunday, we recognize that the God of the Universe “made a way” for us. During this Lenten season, we look closely at our lives and we consider what repentance may be needed or how we can better honor the Lord with our daily lives. How do we start to share this gift, this appreciation, with our littles? How can they possibly understand the depth of this holy day?
I think we just need to meet them where they are, and using vocabulary that they can understand, have intentional conversations. They might not yet understand words like resurrection and eternity, but they can certainly begin to understand words like love, Jesus, and hope. And I’m not just saying this, but BOOKS can help! Selecting books that tell the Easter story, on their levels, can help them understand why this event was history-changing. Saying prayers as a family where we use Jesus’ name and give thanks, makes them aware of the fact that this Man was and is something special and did something amazing. And, going to worship together as a family helps them realize that this event is something to be celebrated.
A sweet and simple book I found for the grands is EASTER IS COMING by Tama Fortner. Amazon summary: “Mommy and her little ones are settling in for story time, and this time it’s the biblical story of Easter that she’s telling….In a time when children’s Easter excitement often focuses on only egg hunts and candy, this book offers a different—and true—reason for joy and expectancy. It’s designed to be read and reread on the days leading up to Easter, telling the greatest story and building a sense of anticipation and celebration in little hearts.“
Another is The EASTER STORY by Autumn Ward. It tells the story of Jesus’ last days with words and images that our littles can understand and relate to. A beautiful new book that I just ordered is An Easter Egg Hunt for Jesus by Susan Jones. Amazon summary: “A quiet forest wakes up from its winter sleep…—spring is here! All the animals are excited for the season of rebirth, because it means Easter is soon to come! Little Bunny and his friends get ready for the special and important day with an Easter egg hunt. But when Little Bunny makes a mistake that makes him think he’s ruined all the fun, his friends and family come together to help him understand the meaning of Easter—a celebration of Jesus’s resurrection and the new life He offers us.
As we BOOK TIME WITH OUR KIDS and plan fun Easter activities, let’s be sure to select text that points them to the Savior. Let’s establish a firm foundation of faith and help them understand that we are about to celebrate the greatest gift of all time.
