Here it is, the reason I am feeling called to enter into this uncomfortable “trying to write a children’s book” process.  This is an attempt to be obedient to the “call to create” in order to honor the Creator.

One of my favorite books and one that I try to re-read every year is Madeleine L’Engle’s book, “Walking on Water”.  A quote at the front of the book reads, “We have been created by the master artist, and in return we must create art that directs others to Him.”

In my years of teaching in the public-school forum, I had a front row seat to the disconnect between God and science. Science is taught as if many complicated processes and designs just randomly occur.  Evolution is referred to and presented as the only scientific way that human life and all life came into existence.

When the right teaching moment presented itself in discussing various world cultures, I would throw out phrases like, “There are other theories of about how life started or creation.”  “There is scientific evidence that promotes creationism.”  “There’s something called intelligent design”.   “There’s this theory called the second law of thermodynamics–   left alone, all systems tend from order to disorder.  They don’t become more complex!   And, “There’s a system idea called irreducible complexity.”    This idea describes a characteristic of complex systems in that they need all of their individual component parts in place in order to function. In other words, it is impossible to reduce the complexity of (or to simplify) an irreducibly complex system by removing any of its component parts. and still maintain functionality (gotquestions.org).  I made sure not to promote my faith, but to present the idea that there were alternate theories of how life began.

There were some students who knew what I was talking about; they had been exposed to other theories through their families or faith-based teachings.  For others, it was a completely new revelation that anything other than evolution was a valid theory.

Many believers are never exposed to the science of creation.  As we are taught in God’s Word,  we often have to seek out Truth, and this is an example of that. If our kiddoes are in the public school realm, seeking out and exposing our kiddoes to the science that supports creation is crucial.

Many of us want to believe in God and that somehow the fairy tales of creation can fit into evolution.   We want to marry our faith to what we learn in school, believing conflicting theories at the same time. We create our own personal “theory” that has no scientic basis at all.

Or….. we can consider the process of human life itself… how a tiny egg grows into an entire human being, a human designed in the image of the Creator Himself. Maybe this God who gives us life and purpose actually specifically designed every part of the human body to function in a magnificent and unique way.

There is a misconception that religion and science are at odds.  Scripture tells us, “The heavens declare the glory of the Lord; the skies proclaim the work of His Hands”, Psalm 19:1.  We can “consider” the heavens and the universe and the evidence that clearly surrounds us.

There are resources for parents who want to teach their children, from an early age, about creation.  A beautiful book I have is titled “When God Made the World” by Matthew Paul Turner.  There is also an incredible ministry and website called Answers in Genesis with an entire museum dedicated to the science behind creation. Ken Ham and his team have even built a life-sized Noah’s Ark in northern Kentucky, on my bucket list for a trip, to be certain!

As we BOOK TIME WITH OUR KIDS, let’s equip them with truth that can be used to ground them in faith and combat some of the lies they will encounter later. We can teach them both the miracles of the Bible and support the science of creation.  He’s a God of miracles for sure, and He’s also The Master Scientist.

Please share and subscribe for a weekly idea of how to BOOK TIME WITH OUR KIDS! ~ and thank you!
