Using books with RHYME and RHYTHM is a fun way to keep our kids’ attention when we are reading with or to them. When I read/sing a book with rhyme (like Baby Beluga , Jesus Loves Me or Night, Night Little Digger), the boys really do pay more attention. Rhyming is just FUN. And it also helps with reading comprehension. Tapping along also helps keep focus! Rhymes can help us remember things and they help us draw conclusions and make inferences too. Here are some Dr. Seuss examples, and I imagine many of you REMEMBER the words because they rhyme:
…”And why is it so many things go to the right?
You can think about that until Saturday night.
Think left and think right and think low and think high.
Oh, the thinks you can think if only you try!” (Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!)

What child and parent can’t relate to this?!:
“Please let me be.
Please go away,
I am NOT going to get up today!
The alarm can ring.
The birds can peep.
My bed is warm.
My pillow’s deep.
Today’s the day I’m going to sleep.” (Dr. Seuss, I am NOT Going to Get up Today!)

And, this one, well, it can be used for our older kids when they graduate from high school or college- the message is relevant and the words are clever…and rhythm and rhyme make it memorable and so much fun to read:
…”You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
You’ll look up and down streets. Look’em over with care. About some you will say, “I don’t choose to go there.” With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet, you’re too smart to go down a not-so-good street.
And you may not find any you’ll want to go down. In that case, of course, you’ll head straight out of town. It’s opener there in the wide open air.…” (Dr.Seuss- Oh, the Places You’ll Go!)
Dr. Seuss created worlds of fantasy where we have to use our imaginations. His books have been used, read, and adored for years. His books are also perfect examples of the phrase, “thinking outside of the box”. Yet, I dare to suggest that his books wouldn’t be so generationally famous if he didn’t implement rhymes! As we “Book Time with Our Kids” this summer, let’s have fun using rhyme and rhythm, let’s expose them to some good old children’s books, and let’s increase reading comprehension all at the same time……the best part of that being just having fun!
