Hunts can lead to discovery of new things, and that is certainly what I’ve discovered on this little writing journey. I began this adventure with the hopes of giving parents/grandparents ideas of how we can use books to raise our children in faith. The site Booking Time with Our Kids was born from that idea. Each week I continue to learn new things that surprise me, find sweet books, and come to the realization that there is much more to learn, even as a “Nana”!
We had several Berenstain Bears books in our home and we read them to our children when they were young. I appreciated the lessons within each story, as they taught things like kindness, respect and manners, all so good. But when I started to look for children’s books that taught the story of Easter, the JESUS story, I was discouraged to find so few. Thus, began the “hunt” for children’s books that simply and truthfully told the story of the cross.
The hunt led to the discovery of some real gems, like The Berenstain Bears and the Easter Story for Little Ones. In words that our littles can easily understand , the story of the cross is explained. The images also tell the story, using pictures that are true and soft at the same time. The summary on the back of the book reads: “Join Brother, Sister, and Honey Bear as they discover that Easter is not just about candy and egg hunts, but about the greatest love of all- Jesus and His resurrection!”
If we start talking about Jesus to our littles when they are young, we are preparing them and equipping them to live a life of faith in Christ. In this ever-changing world of confusion, this calling to lead our children in faith is one we must take seriously and act on intentionally. What a perfect time of year to begin: as Holy Week approaches, let’s have these conversations, let’s pray together as families, and let’s plan to worship together. Let’s Book Time with Our Kids, hunting for text that establishes a faith foundation. Not only will our littles learn about the greatest act of love in History, but our own adult hearts will be reminded and encouraged as well ~Thank you, Lord.~
