The EASTER STORY; written by Autumn Ward, Illustrated by Joseph Goode

This year, Easter Sunday will fall on Sunday, April 20, 2025.

Easter is one of the central holidays, or Holy Days, of Christianity. It honors the Resurrection of Jesus three days after His death by crucifixion. For many Christian churches, Easter is the joyful conclusion to the Lenten season of devoted prayer, fasting, and penitence…..Along with the Nativity of Christ, Easter is one of the most important celebrations in the Christian calendar. It is when Christians glorify and give thanks for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. After His crucifixion, death, and burial, Christ rose from the grave three days later. By this, He conquered death and redeemed us from sin (Christianity.com).

For believers, Easter is the most significant holiday, holy day, of all.   On Easter Sunday, we recognize that the God of the Universe “made a way” for us.   How do we start to share this gift, this appreciation, with our littles?   How can they possibly understand the depth of this holy day?

I think we just need to meet them where they are, and using vocabulary that they can understand, have intentional conversations.   They might not yet understand words like resurrection and eternity, but they can certainly begin to understand words like love, Jesus, and hope.  And I’m not just saying this, but BOOKS can help!  Selecting books that tell the Easter story, on their levels, can help them understand why this event was history-changing.  Saying prayers as a family where we use Jesus’ name and give thanks, makes them aware of the fact that this Man was and is something special and did something amazing.   And, going to worship together as a family helps them realize that this event is something to be celebrated.

A sweet and simple book I found for the boys is The EASTER STORY by Autumn Ward.   It tells the story of Jesus’ last days with words and images that our littles can understand and relate to.  It’s a precious book that I hope to share each year while they are young.   As we BOOK TIME WITH OUR KIDS, let’s be sure to select text that points them to the Savior.  Let’s select text that starts to establish a firm foundation of faith and helps them understand that we are about to celebrate the greatest gift of all time.
